Welcome.

you are so busted.

I am a virus spreading optimism is an interface to explore role-playing games through various forms of media. This interface offers users to participate in dark play. Dark play can be defined as a type of play where players do not know that they are playing. My dark play game explores role-playing as a fun distracting means to get my players to commit the crime of graffiti. Often when a technological interface is changed we are fooled into believing that the new technology is just that: new, rather it is always reframing human activities in a way we might not possibly understand at first. I have created this role-playing game campaign to explore this particular human activity of role-playing and how it might change from interface to interface. The first interface is set in a physical environment that begs for dialogue into a virtual environment which is that on the corresponding website for the project. Players will be encouraged to take free stickers and use them as a graffiti tool. Graffiti is illegal however, as we know, changing the interface innately changes our perception of the situation. It is easier to commit a crime when it is free and fun and well designed, or not? I will track the migration of the stickers and record my results on the website. The website will also have a forum where users will be able to post, or tagg, there own phrases which I will use in the second installment.
Each sticker has a different phrase that is quirky, funny, or deeply sincere statement of past self-improvement, as if the artist is willing them into existence. In this role-playing game, my players will only be able to role-play these versions as well of themselves. Ultimately, I am not trying to make a statement which attacks new interfaces, rather explores our deep desire to think of them as something that will (self-) improve us.
